7:30 pm - Axe Throwing
Registration: $5 fee to reserve your seat and axe (maximum 25 people)

About the Talk:
Whether you dabble in your own home brew or remember your grandfather making homemade wine or you recently visited a brewery or winery, this talk will provide you with the chemistry behind the yeast, grains, malt extracts, and the darkness.
About the Speaker:
Professor Merkhofer graduated from Gettysburg College with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry and molecular biology in 2002. He received a PhD in genetics and molecular biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010, where he studied the role of transcription factors in breast cancer. He subsequently completed an IRACDA fellowship at the University of California-San Diego. In his free time, Professor Merkhofer is an avid homebrewer and runner.
Professor Merkhofer's research interests involve using model organisms such as budding yeast to investigate the regulation of gene expression, in particular pre-mRNA splicing, and the role of gene expression in normal cellular processes and disease. He is also interested in developing inquiry-based laboratory projects to provide an exciting lab experience to students.
