ACS Executive Board Minutes

January 25, 2005 at Hudson Valley Brew Pub

 

In Attendence: John Galbraith, Neil Fitzgerald, Joan Skinner, Daniel Freedman, Mary Dery, John Edwards, Joseph Tanski

 

John Galbraith discussed the speakers for the upcoming ACS meeting:

The Chemistry of Roasting Coffee by Dr. Thomas Parliament of Parliment Consulting on Wednesday, February 9, 2005, 7:00 PM, Marist College, Donnelly Hall, Room 237

 

Election results were discussed.

 

Councillors update – John Harrington will be attending ACS Meeting San Diego. Requested that members inform him if he can cover anything for them at the meeting.

It was suggested that he ask about electronic mailing for ballots (big money saver and much more convenient). Mary Dery also suggested to see if the ACS has any plans to become involved with other National Chemistry Societies such as those in Europe.

 

WCC

Mary Dery discussed the WCC events planned for the near future.  WCC had a meeting at the Umami Thai Restaurant in Fishkill on January 7, 2005. Discussed at the meeting was a Spring Chemistry badge event for Ulster County, as well as 1 day Chemistry badge event to be held for all interested Girl Scouts…..held at Ulster Community College on October 1 2005.

 

STANYS (Science Teacher Association of NY State) will be holding a Workshop on Water Chemistry (designed for Middle School chemistry teachers)…to be held in Ellenville?

 

Sarjit Kaur mentioned a Forensic Workshop to be held at SUNY New Paltz on March 5.

 

It was mentioned that the ACS meetings and events (undergraduate symposium) should be better represented to school teachers as a chance to get service credits.

 

Undergraduate Symposium

Joe Tanski discussed Undergraduate Research Symposium to be held on Wednesday April 20. Poster session will be help 3:00-4:00 with a talk by Dr Ronald Breslow to follow at 5:00, Dinner at the Alumni House at 6:15. Various ways of increasing attendance were discussed including pushing the times forward a little to allow people to attend after work. Suggested that the event be advertised with the adjacent ACS sections (NJ, CT).

 

Next Newsletter due Mid to Late March – NCW events will need to be in the next edition.

 

End of Year Financials – presented by Joan Skinner. An approved budget will be sent out shortly.

 

Other News:

Dan Friedman will be going for leadership training is Baltimore.

A volunteer to be NCW coordinator is needed.

Executive committee contact info needs to be updated and distributed.

Question was raised as to whether the ACS crew should man the Hudson River cruise in July.

 

Next Executive meeting will be on Wednesday, February 23 at the Gilded Otter, New Paltz
