Minutes for the Mid-Hudson ACS Executive Committee Board Meeting

November 7, 2002

Attending:  Michelle Rodden, Joan Skinner, Dan Freedman, Tim MacMahon, Patty Cusatis, David Straus, Lynn Maelia, John Harrington.

The minutes from October 3 meeting were approved.

President’s Report – A couple of things from National.  First, we should hear about the $3000 grant sometime next week.  National has also requested that we explore the possibility of forming a Younger Chemists Committee.  Since these are typically for graduate students and post-docs, the idea was judged to be a non-started for the Mid-Hudson section.  M.R. also reported that the section will purchase the local section label service for January and July.

A newsletter will be going out in early February.  Information for publication must be send to Patty by Mid-January.

Program Chair’s Report – S.K. reported that the schedule for next year is falling in to place in spite of the lack of ACS tour speakers.  The schedule so far is:

March – Dr. Kathy Weathers from the Institute for Ecosystems Studies; April – Dr. Michael Cann from U. Scranton; June – Dr. Miriam Rossi from Vassar College; July  - Boat Ride; August – Dr. Huang from U. Conn; December – Family Night

S.K. indicated that she will contact Neil Fitzgerald and John Galbraith at Marist and find out if either of them would be interested in becoming Awards Chair.

Olympiad. -L.M. has signed us up for the Olympiad for 2003.  The schedule will be:March – classroom examination; April – National Exam; July – training at Air Force Academy

National Chemistry Week – Iris Sandow had 300 people come to their event.  Approximately 30 people attended the NCW Family Night at New Paltz.  Orange County CC had 26 kids attend their Family Night.  Family Night events at Mt. St. Mary’s and Poughkeepsie were cancelled.  The poetry contest received 188 entries and 292 posters were submitted for consideration.

It was agreed that several of our events should be nominated for the Phoenix Awards: College Bowl for Event for Specific Audience category; The poetry contest for Best Contest category; OCC’s “Find the Soap” activity in the Hands on Activity/Demonstration category

Election D.F. reported that the ballots would be in the mail by Friday.  The high cost of the ballot sparked a brief discussion of the possibility of going to an electronic ballot.  D.S. indicated that National was headed in that direction.

Treasurer’s Report J.S. presented a prospective budget for 2003 that retained all of the items from 2002 which was in the red by about $2000.  Several alterations were made in the budget to bring it into balance.  Specifically: a) $1000 was removed for extra travel to a second leadership conference as it was deemed unnecessary, b) The poster session this year will charge a registration fee of $25/poster up to a maximum of $100 per school and c) The budget for National Chemistry Week was cut by $250.

J.S. will present a reworked budget at the next meeting.

The meeting was adjourned so the Executive Committee could become art critics (judging poster submitted for NCW poster competition)

Respectfully submitted by Daniel Freedman, Secretary, Mid-Hudson ACS.
