Dr. Regis Pellet

ChevronTexaco

 New Windsor, NY

Wednesday, September 22, 2004

7:00 PM

Dinner is $17 per person and includes Chicken Francese, penne primavera, rice, tossed salad, rolls, dessert, iced tea, coffee, and tea.  Please make dinner reservations by September 15th.  Contact Dr. Lynn Maelia (Mount Saint Mary) at (845) 569-3131 or by email at maelia@msmc.edu.

About the lecture: In today's engines, a coolant must do a lot more than prevent freeze-up in the winter and boil-over in the summer.  A coolant must protect all engine components from corrosion, erosion, and cavitation damage in the very harsh environment of the engine's cooling system.  In the past, a coolant might last for a couple of years in this environment, if properly maintained. Today, leading coolant technology will last for the life of the vehicle, out to 150,000 miles and beyond, while providing system protection.  How have coolants evolved to meet these challenges? What changes in coolants chemistry are required to protect the modern engine?  This seminar will attempt to answer these questions and provide some insight into the directions future coolants technology is heading.

About the speaker: Dr. Pellet received his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Seton Hall University.  He has spent most of his career working in the area of catalysis for petroleum refining and petrochemicals at Amoco, Union Carbide, and, as of 1991, Texaco (now ChevronTexaco).  Since 1995, Dr. Pellet has been working in ChevronTexaco's Coolant Technology Group, applying the surface chemistry experience he gained in catalysis to the field of corrosion prevention (corrosion inhibition) for automotive and heavy duty coolants.

Directions to Mount Saint Mary College: Mount Saint Mary is located at 330 Powell Avenue in Newburgh.  For additional information, visit www.msmc.edu.

American Chemical Society

Mid-Hudson Section

College Recognition Award

The Mid-Hudson Section of the American Chemical Society is once again sponsoring a College Recognition Award.  The purpose of this award is to recognize achievement in the field of chemistry and to encourage further study in chemistry.  One student from each college in the Mid-Hudson Section will be presented an award.  The student and his/her advisor will be guests of the Mid-Hudson Section at its December 2004 meeting.  The student will be presented with a certificate and cash award.

The chemistry faculty at each college should select one award winner on the basis of general excellence in chemistry.  Four-year degree-granting colleges may wish to recognize a junior year student, while a community college may select a second-year student.

Winner selections from the faculty should be submitted by November 7th.   Please send the student’s name, as well as faculty advisor’s name to Patti Cusatis via email (patti63@aol.com) or by regular mail to 15 Arrowhead Court, Newburgh, NY 12550.  If you have any questions regarding this award, please do not hesitate to contact Patti at (845) 569-1359.

Sunday, October 17th Chemists’ Hike at Poet’s Walk in Annandale-on-Hudson, 2:00 pm.  A botanical guided tour of one of our local treasures.  The park's mown and gravel paths provide access to the 120 acres of fields and forest.  The park's design reflects 19th century picturesque style of American landscape design. The extraordinary vistas, sunlit fields, and thick forest were the focus of landscape architect Hans Jacob Ehlers’ vision for the property in 1849. Using walls of foliage and breaks in the rise of a field or a stone wall, he created several "outdoor rooms", each evoking a different atmosphere.  As you walk the park, you will see the maturity of his design, which has endured through the efforts of previous landowners.  Today, the visual integrity of the park and its setting is protected by The Scenic Hudson Land Trust's conservation easements on the surrounding 800 acres.  Directions:  From the Hudson River, going east, after the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge (this is Rte. 199), turn left (north) onto River Road, County Rte. 103. Poet's Walk Park is on the left side of the road.
