Mid-Hudson Section of the American Chemical Society - High School Chemistry Mini Grants

The Mid-Hudson Section of the ACS has funded up to five $800 grants to be awarded to high schools in the area covered by the Mid-Hudson Section. The grants must be used to enhance the laboratory portions of high school chemistry classes.  In particular, we expect the funds to be used to introduce new experiments or enhance existing experiments by the purchase of supplies or equipment.  Although we expect to focus the grants on enhancements in AP chemistry courses, we will also consider proposals that focus on Regents chemistry.  In support of this program, the chemistry departments at Marist, New Paltz, Vassar, and Orange County Community College will make available on the Mid-Hudson Section web site (http://www.midhudsonacs.org) lists of the General Chemistry experiments currently being used at those colleges along with contact information for someone who can provide information about the experiments - PDF of Experiments . Applicants can, of course, propose introducing other experiments. The grants will be awarded this spring with the expectation that new experiments will be introduced in the 2007-2008 school year.

Mini Grants Awarded

Three Hudson Valley teachers have been awarded an $800 mini-grant from the Mid-Hudson Section of the American Chemical Society. The funds will be used to purchase equipment and chemicals to either add new experiments to the AP Chemistry curriculum at their high schools or upgrade current experiments. The three recipients are Heather Wheeler from FDR High School in Hyde Park , Mark Tatro from the James O’Neill High School in Highland Falls , and Margaret Loh from John Jay High School in Hopewell Junction.  Ms. Wheeler will be using the grant to develop a kinetics experiment in which students can use the visible fluorescence from the reaction to measure initial reaction rates. The money will be used to purchase chemicals as well as pay for a portion of an analytical balance. Mr. Tatro will introduce an experiment into the AP curriculum focusing on pH and buffers. The money will be used to purchase chemicals and glassware. Ms. Loh will be using the grant to purchase colorimeters and pH meters to upgrade current labs in the AP curriculum.
